Why Organic?

Coming in 2024, we will begin offering organic options for all bulk orders!  We have been asked more than once if we would ever consider it, and the inquiries spurred me to do some research.  I found myself wondering the following:  is organic even regulated? (yes!) and can my business afford to pay the premium prices for organic meat?  (yes!)  My research indicated that there is value in eating organic meat - read on to find out why!

Organic meat and conventionally grown meat differ primarily in the methods used for raising and processing the animals. While both types provide a source of essential nutrients, organic meat is often touted for several potential benefits compared to conventionally grown meat:

No Synthetic Hormones and Antibiotics:

Animals raised for organic meat are not given synthetic hormones or antibiotics. This is in contrast to conventionally raised animals, which may receive growth hormones and antibiotics to promote rapid growth and prevent diseases in crowded conditions.

Natural Diet:

Organic livestock are typically fed organic feed that is free from synthetic pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This ensures a more natural and balanced diet.

Conventionally raised animals may be fed with non-organic feed that could contain pesticides, GMOs, and other additives.

Animal Welfare:

Organic farming practices often prioritize animal welfare, providing animals with access to outdoor spaces and more humane living conditions.

In some conventional farming systems, animals may be raised in confined spaces, which can lead to ethical concerns regarding their well-being.

Environmental Impact:

Organic farming tends to focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, such as crop rotation and reduced use of synthetic chemicals, which can have positive effects on soil health and biodiversity.

Intensive conventional farming practices can contribute to environmental issues, including soil degradation, water pollution, and the overuse of resources.

Nutritional Content:

Some studies suggest that organic meat may have slightly higher levels of certain nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, due to the animals' natural diets.

Nutrient levels can vary, and the use of additives in conventional feed may affect the overall nutritional profile of the meat.

Reduced Pesticide Residues:

Since organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides, organic meat is less likely to contain pesticide residues.

Conventionally raised animals may be exposed to synthetic pesticides through their feed, which can potentially lead to residues in the meat.

Do I really need to buy organic meat?

For me, the most important and relevant details about organic meat are 1:  more Omega 3 fatty acids in organic meats and 2;  Organic meats also don't get antibiotics, which is a common practice on conventional farms. Experts agree that the regular use of these drugs can lead to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. If you buy conventional meat, trim off the fat and skin. That's where pesticide hides.

It's essential to note that individual preferences, values, and priorities can influence the choice between organic and conventionally grown meat. While organic meat may offer certain benefits, it's important for consumers to consider factors such as cost, availability, and overall dietary choices when making decisions about meat consumption.
